Online Advertising of the Future
As much as no one wants to admit it, it appears that PPC (Pay Per Click) may be on its way out, and if things don't change with it soon, returns will start to decline. Part of the reason for the drop-off in PPC popularity is the proliferation of it. PPC ads can be seen on almost every web page, and because it's everywhere, a lot of people perceive it as spam and simply ignore it. The premise behind pay-per-click advertising is good, and most internet marketers know that the ads are targeted to whatever a person is looking for.
PPC offered particularly high returns when it was first introduced, but as it grew in popularity, some began to perceive it as making the websites it appeared on look "dirty". As more and more sites began to add PPC ads to their websites, the lower returns will be. Another thing affecting the return on investment for PPC ads is the actions of unscrupulous webmasters, who click on their own PPCs to get more money. These reasons mean that web marketers need to look for a new advertising model, and online advertising of the future may be done through slide shows.
Slide show advertising has been experimented with in a variety of places, but it has not yet reached full functionality. For example, a website called the Business Poster has tried to build something great- it allows stores, people and companies to add their banner ads in the appropriate category. The slide show works on a frequency basis; the ad's uploader chooses the frequency with which their ad comes up (once a day, once an hour). This ensures that the advertiser gets their money's worth, and eliminates the problems that come with normal slide shows; namely, the favoritism showed to the first person to place an ad.
Slide show ads can be scaled much larger than PPC campaigns. With a slide show, companies without a website can advertise by adding a banner with their email address and phone number, and they will get more customers that way. Another good thing about slide show advertising is that people can post more than just ads- they can post meetings and events, which just isn't possible with pay-per-click advertising. Slide shows are more interactive than PPC, and they can serve as a catalog, and so much more. Their versatility means that slide shows are the online advertising of the future.
