Search Engine Optimization

There are many search engine optimization (SEO) techniques that, if continually updated, will organically increase your business site's search engine ranking. Here, we will outline six very basic SEO keys, and if you use these, your website's search ranking will improve almost immediately.

Research your keywords. This is one of the most critical points in raising your site's search rankings, but it is also the most misunderstood. When doing keyword research, the goal is to find a keyword describing your site's subject matter. Once you've chosen that word (or couple of words), the next step is to search the web with specialized keyword research applications, and find so-called "long tail" keywords that come with high search numbers and low numbers of competitive websites. Keyword research can be a long process, but due diligence will make a big impact on your site's ranking in the search engines.

Title tags must be SEO-friendly. Make your title tag rich in keywords and embed it in the HTML header of your page, or in your blog admin page's title section. When your page appears in the search results, your title tag will likely be displayed. Along with the title tag, you should create a meta-tag and embed it in the HTML header or blog configuration page as well. The meta-tag is a short description of your page, and it is seen by the search engines so they can learn what your web page is about.

Use your keywords as anchor text. Anchor text is a phrase that, when moused over, provides a link to another web page. They also tell the search engine what the user is looking for when they click. This technique is frequently overlooked, but it is used a lot in SEO consulting. Also, you should ensure that when you create your link structure, that all of your links are listed by their complete URL.

Search engine workers are pretty smart people, and the programs and algorithms they come up with are always being tinkered with and improved so that they can find the best content for their customers (that's us, the users of the search engines). For the best shot at long-term success, you need to have a plan in place to ensure your content is updated from time to time, based on keyword research and your marketing effort.

Write your web text for the people who will be seeing your site, and include enough keywords to make sure that the search engines see them, but not to the point where your site is seen as spam. Stuffing your site too highly with keywords will cause it to be penalized in the rankings, or removed entirely. There are many aspects to search engine optimization, but these are some techniques that work for almost everyone.
